PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Clutching involuntary attack rifles, truckloads of U.N. infantry patrolled the streets of Haiti"s cracked collateral on the day after the trembler strike last month, clearly preoccupied to the wretchedness around them.

World&&&&Natural Disasters

Cries for assistance from people digging for survivors in collapsed buildings were drowned out by the bark of heavy-duty engines as the infantry plowed by Port-au-Prince but interlude to stick on rescue efforts, majority less lead them.

A usual steer since they were deployed in 2004, the U.N. infantry huddled in the shade of their canopied vehicles.

There were about 9,000 uniformed U.N. peacekeepers stationed in Haiti when the upheaval struck on Jan twelve and they were the judicious "first responders" to the mess in the bankrupt Caribbean country, whose notoriously diseased executive supervision was impressed by the scale of the tragedy.

Initially, however, nothing of the peacekeepers appeared to be concerned in hands-on charitable service in what puncture healing experts report as the vicious initial 72 hours after a harmful trembler strikes.

Their reply to the abominable pang was singular to you do security and seeking for looters after the bulk 7.0 upheaval intended majority of the collateral and took what Haitian President Rene Preval says could be as majority as 300,000 lives.

There was looting in the capital, but it paled in some-more aged with the astringency of the charitable crisis.

Horribly-injured patients flooded overstretched hospitals, forcing healing staff to confirm that patients to yield and that were already as well far left to try saving.

"Doctors played God," pronounced Tyler Marshall, a maestro former Los Angeles Times match operative with an general assist organisation that helped out in a tent city erected at the tallness of the destruction on the drift of Port-au-Prince"s University Hospital, the country"s largest.

Scores of U.N. crew died in the quake, together with Hedi Annabi, head of the U.N. mission that was set up in 2004. That helps insist what majority have criticized as a glacially delayed kickoff of service operations after one of history"s misfortune healthy disasters.

But in the days and weeks that followed it mostly seemed that lessons from alternative disasters were abandoned in Haiti as fears of rioting or anarchy overshadowed concerns about removing assist out quickly.

The U.N."s tip charitable assist official, John Holmes, is between those who have chided service agencies, together with the United Nations itself, for you do as well small to assistance Haiti.

"We cannot ... wait for for for the subsequent puncture for these lessons to be learned," Holmes wrote in a trusted email initial published on the website of the biography Foreign Policy.

"There is an obligatory need to progress significantly genius on the ground, to urge coordination, vital formulation and sustenance of aid," pronounced Holmes.

Edmond Mulet, behaving head of the U.N. mission, concurred in an talk that it played a singular charitable purpose in the initial couple of days after the trembler since the operations were effectively decapitated.

"At the unequivocally commencement it was unequivocally formidable since all the domicile was utterly broken and all the care of the mission was killed," Mulet told Reuters.

"CRIMINALS AND BANDITS"

Mulet gained prominence for wielding an iron fist during a prior army as head of the U.N. mission when he led mostly Brazilian "blue helmet" infantry in a successful crackdown on Haiti"s heavily armed gangs.

And he has finished no tip about sophistry the competing needs of service operations with law enforcement, in his bid to lane down the some-more than 3,000 inmates who took value of the trembler to shun from the main prison.

"We are here additionally to yield security," he pronounced when asked about the mess of convoys of rifle-wielding U.N. infantry to poke for people trapped in the rubble of the busted capital.

"I still have to patrol, I still have to go after all these criminals and bandits that transient from the inhabitant penitentiary, the squad leaders, the criminals, the killers, the kidnappers. I cannot unequivocally confuse myself from you do that."

The service mission shifted in to higher rigging after U.S. infantry deployed in large numbers and set up a supply sequence to get food and disinfectant in to areas great out for aid.

But there were still majority bottlenecks and setbacks, mostly involving U.N.-linked food distributions hobbled by unsound organization, reserve and throng control.

Unfortunately, U.N. infantry in Haiti have over the years gained a repute for toughness and abuse some-more than for easing pang in the lowest nation in the Americas.

"The usually time I"ve seen one of these U.N. infantry burst out of the behind of a lorry was to kick up on somebody or take a shot at them," pronounced a piece of the U.S. Army"s 82nd Airborne Division, as he worked security during a new assist handout.

"These guys have since all of us in unvaried a bad repute here," he said, asking not to be identified.

Haiti"s wrecked infrastructure and bad ride links finished it formidable to get assist out and keep it flowing, but that frequency finished the incident opposite from that in alternative new disasters around the globe.

"POOREST AND MOST VULNERABLE"

"The lowest and the majority exposed people lend towards to live in the regions that are strike the majority by healthy disasters," pronounced Solomon Kuah, an puncture healing medicine formed in New York who outlayed 4 weeks in Port-au-Prince after the quake.

There are no arguable estimates for the series of survivors who died from injuries due to unsound healing supplies.

But Henriette Chamouillet, the World Health Organization"s deputy in Haiti, pronounced all from staff shortages to bureaucracy and a miss of make-up lists embroiled the smoothness of containers full of medicines from Port-au-Prince"s airfield to doctors on the ground.

Port-au-Prince sits usually 700 miles off the seashore of Miami, that is home to a large Haitian-American community, and it seemed ludicrous that so couple of the U.S. infantry rushed there spoke French or were accompanied by translators.

One retaining picture of pell-mell food distributions came when U.S. helicopters offloaded boxes of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) at a site in the capital. Many Haitians non-stop them up usually to toss them afar in offend since no French or Creole-language instructions were enclosed with the assumingly invalid packets of dust, explaining that they indispensable to be churned with H2O as piece of their preparation.

Rajiv Shah, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development, has touted the Haiti service mission as "the largest and majority successful general poke and rescue bid ever fabricated in history."

But some-more than 6 weeks after the upheaval hit, the mission is still mostly in an puncture reply mode. The U.N."s World Food Program is tying the food rations to 55-pound (25 kg) bags of rice and the Haitian supervision estimates that a million upheaval survivors are still vital in the streets in temporary encampments with no using H2O or toilets.

Doctors are roughly finished traffic with dire injuries but reconstruction for a little 40,000 amputees and rebuilding Haiti"s health infrastructure are between long-term challenges.

"This is unequivocally a mess of Biblical proportions," pronounced Lewis Lucke, who was the USAID executive in Iraq prior to entrance to Haiti as U.S. ambassador.

U.N. and alternative officials have pronounced the tellurian reply to Haiti"s upheaval was quicker and some-more in effect than in alternative new disasters, together with the Asian tsunami that killed 226,000 people in thirteen countries in Dec 2004.

But experts contend the United Nations has a lot to sense from smaller, some-more nimble healing groups similar to International Medical Corps, or IMC, and Paris-based Medicins Sans Frontieres, along with charities some-more experienced in distributing aid, such as CARE and Catholic Relief Services.

Kuah, who concurrent service efforts for IMC, a California-based organisation that had rarely learned doctors treating patients in Haiti twenty-three hours after the trembler struck, stressed the "need for speed" when it comes to saving lives.

"When you ask yourself if there were ways you could have prevented some-more mortalities or discontinued additional mortality, with earthquakes, in particular, it"s some-more timing than anything else," pronounced Kuah.

Could this be as great as it gets for Lionel Messi? Football

Oliver Kay, Football Correspondent & ,}

It will be remembered as the night Lionel Messi went stratospheric. That was the verb they opted for at AS, the Spanish sports newspaper, and if it carries an import that he is not utterly in the same area as the supposed galácticos of Real Madrid, it is given the Barcelona forwards stellar opening opposite Arsenal defied all logic.

Messi is producing football that seems to go on an additional planet. We live in an age of hyperbole, but it is no deceit to indicate that the universe has not seen anything similar to this given Diego Maradonas heyday.

Stars have shone brightly Marco outpost Basten, Roberto Baggio, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and, on top of all, Zindine Zidane but not similar to this, not utterly similar to the irresistible, mind-blowing form that Messi has demonstrated over the past 3 or 4 weeks.

And that, in a small ways, is the point. Messis opening turn for the past year or so has been unusual in that time he has come to obscure Cristiano Ronaldo as the worlds superb player but it is usually in the past month or so that he has left stratospheric.

Related LinksArsenal left drunken by the small maestroMessi will mount to one side Pele and MaradonaRivaldo, Stoichkov, Ronaldo, Cruyff: were you watching?

He has scored thirteen times in his past eight appearances for Barcelona overwhelming hat-tricks opposite Valencia and Real Zaragoza followed by an overwhelming four-goal explosion opposite Arsenal on Tuesday and such is the peculiarity of his goals, as well as the quantity, it is tantalizing to consternation usually how prolonged it can be sustained.

At a small point over the entrance weeks, Messi will have a stinker, maybe opposite Real on Saturday in el gran clásico or, as it has been dubbed by the ever-downbeat Spanish press, the compare of the millennium or opposite Inter Milan in possibly leg of the Champions League semi-final.

But fluctuations in form are to be expected, even for such a shining player. The bigger issue for Messi is either he can take the outrageous burst from mass to enduring fame a cove that has valid over each player given Maradona, even if Van Basten and Ronaldo, prior to injury, and Zidane have come close.

The long-accepted knowledge is that players rise in in in between the ages of twenty-six and 30, but this is at contingency with an worried being that has started to arise in new years. This mostly ignored materialisation can be seen in the list of winners of the Ballon dOr, which, given 1956, has been presented to the years superb player in European and, latterly, universe football.

Through the initial 4 decades of the history, the award, with a couple of exceptions, went to players in in in between the ages of twenty-seven and 33. But, of the past thirteen winners given 1997, eight together with 4 of the past five have been elderly twenty-six or underneath and usually two, Pavel Nedved in 2003 and Fabio Cannavaro 3 years later, have been over the age of 28.

Top-class football is apropos a immature mans game. Of those childish winners of new years, Ronaldo, Michael Owen and Ronaldinho would attest that the diversion came some-more of course in their youth, when they had the athleticism to frighten opponents.

Of those three, Ronaldinho appearance latest, in in in between the ages of twenty-three and 26, but he looks a prolonged approach over the mountain at 30. Ronaldo and Owen, who had both arguably appearance by the age of 22, can justifiably cite injuries, but that is precisely the point. Who would have illusory at that age that those players, marvellous in their teenagers and early 20s, would have seen their careers flutter afar as they have done?

Messi, 22, has a poignant value in that he is not reliant on gait and does not appear to be exposed to that bizarre Catalan sadness that seemed to corrupt the appetite and the unrestrained out of Rivaldo and Ronaldinho and even Maradona. He appears humble, personification with a grin in contrast, perhaps, to the Cristiano Ronaldo simper but he is not defence to injuries and the twists of predestine that have stopped most a world-class player fulfilling his strong destiny.

Messi might be stratospheric, but, prior to adventurous to place him on the same pedestal as Maradona, we should simply suffer what he is doing. It is an unnerving thought, but experience warns us that this could be as great as it gets.

Bruce Anderson Only a opposite care can save the Irish churchBruce Andersonators

There is no reason to disbelief the frankness of Pope Benedicts feelings. His minute was powerful, celebration of the mass as if it had been created from the heart. So it should have been. Nothing less would suffice. The word "abuse" does not proceed to report the miseries that a small of those Irish young kids endured.

Go behind 50 years to farming Ireland. The past is an additional country? More identical to an additional world. The gait of hold up is as peaceful as the unchanging showers of light rain, as contented as the unblemished pouring of a potion of Guinness and all seems as agreeable as that pint when it eventually arrives. True, there is not majority pointer of energy. It is a small years given the last chairman with any get-up-and-go got up and went. But there is regularly great craic to be had, infrequently on critical subjects. The traveller would be reminded that twelve hundred years ago, when Western Christianity was struggling to survive, a small of the majority successful struggles took place in the West of Ireland, where the monasteries were between the couple of points of light in the Dark Ages.

The Irish haven an individual utterance for their prolonged story of suffering. The speak competence afterwards move brazen a thousand years, to the second dim age for Irish Catholicism: scarcely 3 centuries of harm by the English and the Protestants, during that the Church had a consequential purpose in preserving Irish inhabitant identity, "crucial" being the suitable word. Priests and bishops did bear the cranky of martyrdom. It competence be that the bishopric clergyman himself would be there to have that point, greeted tenderly but respectfully, identical to the CO of a ordain nearing in the mess: the healthy celebrity of the community. By now, the caller competence have resolved that Irish Catholicism was an drastic conviction and that the total of farming Ireland was Yeats" Innisfree, an emerald of prelapsarian innocence.

But there was an additional aspect, that no traveller would encounter. Imagine that you are a small Irish kid in an orphanage. You are probably there since your mom followed Holy Churchs teachings on contraception but not on fornication. "In sin hath my mom recognised me". The Irish waif would have felt the full weight of that sin as the chagrin of his bastard was belligerent in to him. There is a heartless irony. The establishment would have been run by priests, monks and nuns all of them in the use of a amatory Redeemer. "Suffer the small young kids to come unto me". Those small Irish young kids would have schooled all about suffering.

Orphanhood is not an easy destiny. It contingency be tough for even the best-run establishment the really word helps insist the complaint to reinstate the love and cuddles and love that a mom would provide: the foundations of a happy personality. That brings us to the pinnacle of cruelty. A lot of those young kids did embrace a unusual satire of love and a corruption of love, in the form of passionate abuse. Imagine the feelings of such a child. He has mostly been told that he is a inhuman wretch, usually fit to be half-starved and flogged. Now there is violation, at the hands of those whom he has been taught to revere. An waif kid would wholly miss the egghead and romantic resources to have clarity of what was function to him. It was evil, but priests are never evil. So his wrong contingency be to blame. They are right. He is worthless.

Thus did young kids sigh themselves to sleep. Thus did a sacrament of love demonstrate itself in Catholic Ireland. Thus were lain the foundations of abused personalities. "Deliver us from evil". The gates of those orphanages should have borne a various inscription: "Deliver us to evil". It is of march loyal that not all the victims were orphans. But any abused Irish kid could be regarded as an titular orphan, generally if he came from a bad family. To whom was he to complain? Who would hold him? To have up such distressing lies: it contingency be the demon talking. So it is easy to assimilate since a lot of young kids would have kept quiet, their feelings of uncleanness and their annoy both festering down the decades.

Let us right away switch the concentration of the talented magnetism from the victims to the hierarchy. Why and how could this have happened? Until at slightest the Sixties, Ireland was probably a theocracy. But this was not the peaceful theocracy that the traveller encountered in the club at Ballyguinness. The Irish Catholic Church was some-more identical to the Turkish army. It regarded itself as the protector of the nations values. Its comparison total tended to be authoritarian, intolerant, uninspired and formidable. The classical e.g. was John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop of Dublin for some-more than thirty years, who ran his archdiocese identical to an appanage. Prime Ministers went in astonishment of him. In those days, Ireland was a bad country. Life was mostly harsh. This did not appear to difficulty the hierarchy unduly. Archbishop McQuaid never took majority seductiveness in Kiltartans poor. His regard was with power, not love.

And positively not with sex. By the Sixties, passionate hang-up was regarded with antipathy in modernized circles. Catholic Ireland was not an modernized circle. In it, hang-up was to sex what Guinness was to oysters: the preferred accompaniment. That said, there are right away rumours that John Charles himself was guilty of abuse. If so, he was not usually an old monster, but a false old monster. But it is tough to believe. He and identical total in the Catholic hierarchy would have regarded any form of ecclesiastic passionate retort with horror, partly since it would be expected to emanate a liaison that would disturb the tranquil effort of Irish theocracy (they were right).

So: a clergyman is laid open for passionate abuse. In the initial instance, his seniors would have reacted as the titular waif feared that all the grown-ups would. They would not hold it. Then, if their disbelief were violated, their initial greeting would be to close everybody up. Give the clergyman a blasting. Make him swear by all holy that this will never occur again, and move him out of the district. Call in the police? Unthinkable. Instead, have certain that all is lonesome up and stays lonesome up.

In 1975, the stream Primate of All Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, acted in that suggestion when he interviewed dual victims of a paedophile priest, who is pronounced to have abused 90 some-more young kids prior to his contingent arrest. As a result, the Cardinals on all sides is untenable. It is ludicrous that he has not already resigned. But this does not meant that he was evil: merely naive. As he found these crimes revolting, he could not hold that they were so widespread. Whatever precision the Irish Catholic preaching perceived in the Sixties and Seventies, it did not inspire mental sophistication.

Equally, episcopal debility was not cramped to passionate matters. The Irish hierarchy finished no critical try to move dignified vigour on the IRA. Nothing was finished to forestall priests from giving devout joy to murderers. Cowardice is infectious. If the Irish bishops had been rebuilt to take a mount on terrorism, they competence additionally have been tougher on kid abuse. Lives would have been saved; alternative lives would not have been ruined. Out of debility and naivete, the Irish Bishops condoned both terrorists and passionate terrorists. As a result, they have cracked their Churchs status and authority. If at all, that could usually be remade underneath a opposite leadership. But it might be that the Irish Catholic Church is confronting a third and depot dim age.

Effective prostate cancer diagnosis discovery

For some-more than 60 years the main approach to provide men with prostate cancer has concerned stealing the hormones that fuel expansion of the cancer cells. Although primarily in effect this diagnosis fundamentally fails and when the swelling expansion resumes, the disease in incurable. The team, from the Prostate Breast Cancer Research Program, has detected a approach to provide these potentially deadly infirm cells, that sojourn in a studious after they have undergone hormone treatment.

The commentary have been published in the healing biography PNAS.

Associate Dean, Research Centres Institutes and co-author Professor Gail Risbridger pronounced the studies supposing explanation of the argumentative judgment that estrogens (hormones especially thought as being critical for women) could be great for men and used therapeutically to provide prostate cancer.

The investigate showed that drug that turn on one of the dual estrogen receptors, causes cell death. Most ordinarily cell genocide in patients with prostate cancer is completed by withdrawing androgens (male hormones) that formula in castration, Professor Risbridger said.

Although the bulk of the swelling is private by castration, a little cells sojourn and these castrate-resistant cells are the ones that give climb to memorable incorrigible disease

The group used a drug grown to selectively and privately turn on the beta estrogen receptor in the prostate.

It not usually inhibits the expansion of prostate cancer but additionally kills off cancer cells that are resistant to required diagnosis such as androgen damage therapy, some-more ordinarily well known as castration care and does so utilizing a resource that is opposite to castration. Professor Risbridger said.

The group done the find in animal models, and afterwards successfully replicated laboratory formula utilizing human cells and tissues from patients with prostate cancer.

The group at Monash University has detected how this devalue operative by the beta receptors targets a small, but really important, race of cells in the tumour. It is a poignant square of the nonplus that will assistance healing investigate in this margin -- an feat that could in the future raise diagnosis options for patients around the universe with modernized prostate cancer. Professor Risbridger said.

Prostate cancer is the majority usual cancer in Australian men and is the second majority usual means of cancer deaths in men. Each year in Australia, close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer -- next to to the series of women who die from breast cancer annually. About 20,000 new cases are diagnosed in Australia each year and one in 9 men will rise prostate cancer in their lifetime. Current treatments of prostate cancer embody hormone care however studious side goods can be devastating.

This investigate additionally has personal definition and provides me with the needed to control simple biomedical investigate where the elemental outcomes such as those we describe, might in conclusion interpret in to some-more in effect ways to provide prostate cancer Professor Risbridger said.

Participants afterwards had five mins to finish a testin that they had to collect out dual numbers that combined up to 10 from each of twenty matrices. For each span of numbers rightly identified participants could keep $0.50from their income supply. The catch: Participants scored their own work, and theyfigured out how most income they got to keep, and send to the dull envelope, at the finish of the experiment.

They all fared the same on the tests, though participants inthe low room deceived some-more than their counterparts. While those in thewell-lit room reported an normal of 7.8 rightly solved matrices, thedim-room students indicated an normal of 11.5 scold responses. That resultedin a $1.85 disproportion in payout.

Daimler renews joining to EADS pool

FRANKFURT Fri Mar 19, 2010 4:50am EDT Stocks & &

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German carmaker Daimler (DAIGn.DE) has renewed its commitment to a EADS (EAD.PA) shareholder pool, leaving a politically sensitive Franco-German balance of power at the European aerospace group intact.

Deals

Daimler holds 22.5 percent of the voting rights in EADS but shares its stake with a group of 15 investors from the public and private sector, in effect giving Daimler a 15 percent stake and the other investors 7.5 percent.

The accord was worked out in 2007 with the help of the German government.

"The agreement includes an option for Daimler to end this structure as of July 1, 2010. Following consultation with the investor consortium, Daimler will not make use of this option. The existing ownership structure and other arrangements remain unaffected," it said in a statement on Friday.

EADS is controlled by Daimler and a French entity comprising media group Lagardere (LAGA.PA) and the French state. The balance between German and French managers and members of the board of directors is a sensitive issue at the company.

Daimler said this month it may have to book a significant charge in its current business year for indirect exposure to EADS" delayed A400M program.

Samantha Cameron vs Sarah Brown: In this choosing conflict each delegate heel and cardi counts. So who gets your vote?

They say that in politics, it"s women who win elections. In the past, pundits were referring to female voters. Now it"s the leaders" wives who have real pulling power - not through what they say (heaven forbid) but what they wear.

Forget the designers at London Fashion Week this week: all eyes are currently on the Style War being launched before our eyes between Sarah Brown and Samantha Cameron. Every day, we"re treated to another picture that paints a thousand words - about their husbands.

Last Thursday, the opening salvos were fired. Sarah was pictured hugging her new best friend Naomi Campbell at a Haiti charity event wearing a frock from Issa (Kate Middleton"s favourite label) that cost around 350.

sarah brown

On Friday, Sarah opened London Fashion Week in an Erdem dress that sells for around 1,300. Hey presto, on Monday, Samantha Cameron was to be found in the front row at the Erdem show wearing, er, a 665 Erdem number.

Yesterday, at British Burberry, Sam was frontrow wearing a Stella McCartney jacket (British, young, and daughter of Fab Four god), Diesel jeans and LK Bennett shoes (British again). Get the message, voters? Crikey, Sarah will have to come out naked draped in the Union flag to top that!

But this fashion ding-dong is not about fashion. This is aboutfashioning public opinion, about manipulating Joe and Josephine Bloggs"views of the leaders" wives - and through them of their husbands.

With both Gordon Brown and David Cameron still in with a chance of victory at the General Election, and Dave"s poll lead slimmer than a Size Zero model, never have the wives mattered more.

That"s why the hitherto shy Sarah Brown sometimes seems like she is never off the TV, the catwalk or the charity circuit. It appears every moment is devoted to the man she calls "my husband, my hero", and their bid to keep him.

Mellow in yellow

Samantha Cameron, undeniably the more naturally stylish of the two women, is playing a more cautious game - for the time being. But the moment the election is called, these women will each become an integral part of Team Gordon and Team Dave.

Make no mistake, as Michelle Obama proved when she campaigned immaculately, exuberantly and stylishly beside her sometimes aloof husband, the right political wife is electoral gold dust in the modern, image-driven world of power.

In some ways, it"s an unfair comparison. At 38, Sam is eight yearsyounger than Sarah but looks more than a decade her junior. She"snaturally slim and perfectly poised, without a hint of artifice. Andshe has that glossy hair you know she just wakes up with. That womannever has a bad hair day.

And speaking of hair, Sarah"sfriends put it about that she pays just 33 to have her hair cut.Where? In Kosovo? Her hair now looks as though it"s come straight froma top-end salon.

Sam has her hair coloured at celebrity colourist Louise Galvin, where half a head of highlights can cost up to 200.

Poor Sarah, you might think - competing against Mrs Cameron in the style stakes is a tough task. But voters like Sarah because she has to make an effort. In that respect, she"s more like the rest of us. And, ironically, the more fashion faux pas she makes, the more women connect with her.

WhileSam can take a pair of cheap-as-chips 29.95 shoes from Zara and, withthose legs, make them look like Louboutins, Sarah, unfortunately, hasthe ability to make even a pair of 450 Jimmy Choos look like Camilla"sLK Bennett rejects circa 1987.

And while Sam accessorises like the designer she is (she works forupmarket stationer Smythson), Sarah sometimes manages to put the wrongnecklace on the wrong frock.

ladies in red

While Sarah was in head-to-knee Erdem print last Friday looking asthought-through as the mother of the bride, with matronly mid-heelshoes, Sam turned up for his show with a trademark 300 Erdem blouseunder a navy jacket - as colourful and refreshing as a Pimms on a hotsummer"s day.

Oh it"s all just fashion, you might think, but the way these women look is not trivial at all. It"s crucial.

Whilebehind closed doors Gordon Brown and David Cameron are now plottingtheir battle plan with their most trusted inner circle, each wife willhave her own dedicated team drawing up their own campaign strategy.

It"s no accident that Sarah appeared beside Kate Moss and NaomiCampbell at Fashion Week last week. She wants to connect with youngvoters, and Cocaine Kate and Naughty Naomi are, sadly, role models formany young women.

Right now, both Samantha and Sarah willbe choosing the events they should attend in the lead-up to theelection, the charities they will support, the interviews they willgive. And then there are the frocks - dozens of them, up to fourchanges a day: a political minefield worthy of Prime Minister"sQuestions.

TODAY"S POLL

Who is winning the style wars in this election battle?

Their choice of clothes can say so many things. Wearing a Britishdesigner says they"re patriotic; patronising a young designer likeErdem that they"re supporting youth; an expensive handbag signalsprofligacy; a high street range that they"re just like you and me.

You only have to look at pictures of Sarah over the past few monthsto see how seriously she"s taking things. She"s been transformed fromfrump to fox. She"s lost loads of weight, and she has ankles again.

Asa size 14-16 (average British woman), Sarah opts for classic suits andtailored dresses, prefers plain and simple designs, and likes to appearfrugal. She comes across as mostly mumsy, with moments of glamour.

Everythingshe does and wears has a political message. She hired her outfits forthe G20 summit - a way of saying: "I can"t afford all this. I"m likethe rest of you, I"m economising."

One of the brands sheprefers is Britt Lintner, a professional woman who started designingclothes after realising there was nothing for working women to wear.Nice PC message.

The frocks are under 500, which sounds a lot to the average economising mum, but is positively modest for our First Lady.

cute cardigans

She"s also a big fan of the Scottish designer Graeme Black, who has become something of a style adviser to her. His clothes cost thousands - so Sarah rents them.

The Britt Lintner knee-length navy dress she wore to welcome the Obamas to Number 10 on April 1 was a classic - sophisticated and understated. What"s more, she held her own up against the eye-wateringly well-groomed First Lady.

The green chiffon 1,250 Catherine Deane dress Sarah wore in November to the Cosmopolitan Style awards was daring and chic; a triumph. She always wears clothes that real women - the voters - can imagine themselves wearing: modest, calm and warm.

The size 10 Samantha, meanwhile, has that Michelle Obama gift ofblending High Street with high end. She doesn"t tend to favour Britishdesigners but, predictably, given her husband, is pro green products.

Andshe"s just very, very cool. Not overly polished and pristine likeMichelle Obama; not plain and simple like Sarah; not a slave to labelslike Carla Bruni.

Like any busy mum - yes, here"s thepolitical message - Sam is down-to-earth and low maintenance. Herfavourite High Street brands are Reiss, Topshop, Zara, Marks &Spencer and Jigsaw; her favourite high-end designersare the AmericanPhillip Lim, Smythson bags and Erdem.

Her 400 Phillip Limemerald green shift dress at the 2008 Tory Party Conference waseffortless chic. The 29.95 Zara heels worn almost every day at the2009 Tory Party conference were a triumph for Everywoman.

Andthe 65 Marks & Spencer polka-dot grey dress worn to the conferencelast year for her husband"s speech was a masterstroke of elegantunderstatement and recession chic (no matter how many strings she hadto pull to find it).

tightening their belts

Sam doesn"t do the grandstanding Sarah spends most of her life now doing. Like most Tory wives, she stands beside her man - but she lets him get on with the job.

With her constant appearances beside C-List celebrities and fashionistas, Sarah is attempting to broaden Gordon"s appeal; but she is possibly in danger of becoming over-exposed, and also becoming that thing the British public do not like - the centre-stage political wife.

Cherie Blair"s love of the limelight worked against her husband in the end, as did Glenys Kinnock"s. This is not America. Brits elect politicians, not their spouses; and in that sense Sam Cam gets it right every time. She"s strong but not strident, supportive but not centre stage.

Who knows who will be the victor in this intriguing battle between two highly intelligent and politically savvy wives. But know this: in the Sarah v Sam Style Wars, every outfit is a potential vote winner - or loser. There"s a lot riding on the (padded) shoulders of this attractive pair.
